Book Review

by Dr. Andrew Mullins

Why is prayer important? It is the greatest privilege of a human being to accept the invitation to enter into loving communion with God one and triune. How else can we thank the God to whom we owe everything? Where else will we find the motivation to seek out the sacraments the great waterfalls of grace that are given to us? This wonderful book is far more than a simple manual of prayers. Inspired by the great fourth section of the Catechism of the Catholic Church dedicated to prayer, it puts forward a comprehensive case that our lives must be full of prayer, fuelled by prayer, and can only be fulfilled by prayer. And that prayer must, first of all, be Christ centred. Then it will fill our hearts and through it we will carry out the activities of our day imbuing them with love, which is the only thing that counts.

Without prayer we cannot fulfil the mission to which we are called. I am currently reading the letters of a most impressive young woman, Sophie Scholl, who was a 21 year old White Rose dissident to Nazism. In the months before her arrest and execution in 1943 she was led to a truly remarkable depth of character and depth of prayer. She wrote about changing the world: ‘How can we expect justice to prevail when so few people unwaveringly sacrifice themselves for a just cause’; and she wrote about prayer: ‘Open my deaf, deaf heart. Make me restless so that I may find a way to the repose that dwells within you. … you wish me to call upon you, and you have made us responsible in prayer for our fellow creatures.’  Prayer is a gift from God to give us peace of heart, to help others, and to give us the strength to change the world. It is the medium of all who want to be saints. It makes saints of us. ‘It is in prayer the Holy Spirit transforms our lives,’ said St John Paul. How badly we need to put aside time daily for prayer if we do not want selfish aspirations to swamp our ship and drag us under.

In this frenetic age, more than ever we need to find quiet in our souls and open our lives in prayer. ‘Only when we pray can we be truly Christian’ writes Nidoy. How true. We can have the mistaken impression that we are doing God a favour when we pray… rather, only in praying do we live a fully human life. No animal can pray…unless of course it is the good lion that says Grace before Feasting as described by the author in the preface.

On every page we find prayers by which, in all circumstances, we can unite our hearts to that of Christ, but this book is much more than a compendium of vocal prayers… the rich words must spark our own contemplative prayer through the day. The author’s ongoing commentary throughout is a further goldmine of powerful images, insights and inspiring quotations. I thoroughly recommend this book. It is a marvellous resource.
