In 1673, a nun named St. Margaret Mary Alacoque began having visions of Jesus in France. He asked her to spread devotion to His Sacred Heart, which symbolises His deep love for humanity. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is usually portrayed as a heart with flames, representing the burning, undying love that Jesus has for us. It is surrounded by a crown of thorns and has a wound. These symbolise the great sacrifice of Jesus for us on the Cross.
